  1. Priyanka Chopra's MET Gala look

The 2019 Met Gala's theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion, and Priyanka Chopra was certainly one of the biggest news-makers of the event. Her very dramatic caged dress with feathered skirt and long cape from Dior, teamed up with messy hair and glittery eyes, either irked the fashion police or drove them gaga. Either ways, the internet was abuzz with PeeCee's out-of-the-box fashion outing. Not to forget, the priceless memes too!

  1. Malaika Arora and Arjun Kapoor stamp it official!

  1. Tahira Kashyap's brave act of self-love

Ayushmann Khurrana's wife Tahira Kashyap put up a brave show during her battle with cancer. For her, it was all about sharing her progress with the world, therefore lifting others up, injecting some courage in other sufferers, and emphasising on self-love and acceptance. On social media, both she and Ayushmann shared this photo of her bare back, with a deep cut mark that resulted from her breast surgery. The internet was all hearts for not just the photo but Tahira's courage that will hopefully help many more fight their own battles.

  1. Sameera Reddy's under-water maternity photoshoot

We haven't seen Sameera Reddy in a film for long now. Nevertheless, a photo of Sameera flaunting her baby bump in a neon green attire under crystal blue water, absolutely broke the internet. In fact, after a few months, we had Alia Bhatt donning a similar attire for another under-water photoshoot!

#2019recap: From Priyanka Chopra's MET Gala look to Bollywood's selfie with PM Modi, moments that stormed the internet

  1. Presenting, Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev!

This isn't just another first look of just another film. The madness surrounding Ranveer Singh's '83 was at its peak for a long time. And once Ranveer revealed his first look as legendary cricketer Kapil Dev, the unbelievable resemblance left the internet stunned. We're sure you saw it many times, but one more time doesn't hurt!

#2019recap: From Priyanka Chopra's MET Gala look to Bollywood's selfie with PM Modi, moments that stormed the internet

  1. Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt's winning moment

Netizens, for the longest time, assumed whether Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt were actually going around, until they themselves broke silence and admitted the relationship. It was in March this year that they appeared together at an award show and received the awards together. Ranbir was being awarded for Sanju while Alia was being recognised for her performance in Raazi. They posed with their awards, holding each other, and made for a stunning sight.

  1. Anushka Sharma's orange bikini that triggered a meme fest

Anushka is not to be blamed for this. She looked just as pretty, in her orange bikini. But the internet has really intelligent people who were too prompt to find out how uncannily similar the bikini was, to the logo of VLC media player! Check out the photo below, and you can continue to look up the memes on Google.

  1. When 'brothers' united, thanks to Salman Khan

Unless you lived under the rocks, you'd know about Kapil Sharma and Sunil Grover's elaborate and unpleasant spat. They came together in the same frame recently at Sohail Khan's birthday bash, all thanks to Salman Khan, who stood in the middle. This picture had all the right to go viral, and it did!

5 Bollywood Weddings In 2020

2019 was the year of heart-breaking no big splashy weddings in Bollywood in 2019. In the coming year we hope to see some high-profile couples tie the knot in lavish extensively covered weddings. Here’s assessing the marriage potential of 5 in-the-news couples.

5 Bollywood Weddings In 2020

1. Malaika Arora-Arjun Kapoor: No wedding plans for this just-happy-to-be-together couple for various reasons. While Malaika has her hands full of her responsibilities as a single mother (which she would not want to share with anyone else) Arjun’s sister Anshula must be married before he thinks of his own. Hence in 2020, this forever-clicked couple would just be happy being a couple. Any problems with that?

2. Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor: The cynics didn’t give this relationship for more than six months. His commitment-phobic record spoke for itself. But Ranbir has grown older and wiser. He is not the same heartbreaker who dated and dumped Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif, and other unmentionable names.  He wants to settle down. Alia is the perfect bride for the young Kapoor. She is warm, hospitable and crazy about familial togetherness. Most importantly Ranbir’s mother Neetu Kapoor approves this time of her son’s romantic interest. Toh phir der kis baat ki?All this couple needs to do is find a two-month space in their careers. The wedding likely to happen by the end of 2020.

3. Natasha Dalal-Varun Dhawan: Varun’s steady girlfriend for the last six years (he began dating her before he became a part of Bollywood) is not comfortable being part of the filmy crowd.  Varun has to constantly strike a balance between his girlfriend’s space and workplace. Nonetheless, Varun has found his lifetime partner. Varun and Natasha are most definitely tying the knot this year. Varun has already bought a home away (though not too far away) from his parents, brother, Bhabhi, and niece. Their wedding is likely to happen mid-2020.

4. Disha Patni-Tiger Shroff: Let’s cut the chase. This wedding is not happening. Not in 2020. Not anywhere in the future. This is case two highly competitive young achievers in the same profession growing a mutual attraction. While Tiger has raced ahead Disha is slowly and steadily finding her way, having bagged a film with Salman Khan she is not likely to give it all up to be Mrs. Tiger Shroff. Sadly, I feel this couple will move away from one another.

5. Iulia Vantur-Salman Khan: Salman did consider marriage with his Romanian girlfriend. But he dropped all such thoughts after visualizing her walking down that aisle. Iulia just has to be happy being a part of the celebrations in Salman Khan’s household. Sorry, but no wedding bells here. Salman, a diehard virgin, (didn’t he tell Karan Johar that he is saving his virginity for his wife?) will die a bachelor.

Benedict Cumberbatch starrer Doctor Strange 2 will introduce new Marvel characters

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has confirmed that the film will have characters from Marvel that they have always wanted to utilize. During Q&A at New York Film Academy, Feige revealed, "The next Doctor Strange film, for instance, features some new MCU characters which will be making their debut in that movie you won't expect or won't guess who it is but we found a cool way to make it work because we want to make a particular type of movie there and there was a character who we always wanted to do something with who will fit really well there."

Feige also confirmed that Disney+ series Loki will tie into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse Of Madness. The film will feature Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) as Feige mentioned she is currently the most powerful character in MCU after Avengers: Endgame and Spiderman: Far From Home. Kevin said, “If you look at Endgame, Wanda Maximoff was going to kill Thanos. If he hadn’t desperately — that’s as scared as I’ve ever seen Thanos. And if he hadn’t said, ‘Decimate my entire team to get her off of me,’ I think she would’ve done it.” Doctor Strange 2 is speculated for the 2021 release.

Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek reveals how playing Freddie Mercury influenced him in James Bond - No Time To Die

2019 was a phenomenal year for Rami Malek who starred as Queen singer, late Freddie Mercury, in Bohemian Rhapsody. While his performance was highly applauded by the critics, he is moving ahead with yet another interesting role and this time as a villain in James Bond: No Time To Die.

Bohemian Rhapsody star Rami Malek reveals how playing Freddie Mercury influenced him in James Bond - No Time To Die

This will be the final installment for Daniel Craig who takes on the 007 role for the last time. Speaking about his villainous role Safin in the upcoming Bond film, Rami Malek revealed how Bohemian Rhapsody taught him to avoid being a carbon copy while prepping for the role. “If I went in there and tried to make a carbon copy of someone, what joy or fun would that be for anybody? I guess that may be a lesson I learned from Mr. Mercury,” he told Empire Magazine.

“If it’s not original, then why bother? I’ve pocketed some things from some of my favourites. But I tried to every day imbue this character with something I thought made sense for the character, but might also at the same time be shocking and unnerving," he added.

Malek also revealed that he worked with his Bohemian Rhapsody voice coach to perfect his accent for the bond villain role. “I wanted to create something that we couldn’t quite peg from any particular part of the world,” he said.

In No Time To Die, James Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Another year has ended but this one was different. It had too many twists and turns. Several films that were not expected to work or were to be average grossers became huge hits. On the other hand, a few films that could have easily been biggest grossers of the year, underperformed. In this Bollywood Hungama Special Feature, we take a look at sixteen interesting trends of the ticket window in 2019:

1. Underperforming year for Salman Khan

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Salman Khan had two films, both of which failed to really impress the audiences. His Eid release, Bharat, was met with mixed response, which affected its overall box office outcome (Rs 194 crore). His Christmas offing, Dabangg 3, was poorer and has failed to reach even the Rs. 150 crore mark.

2. Even underperforming films of Salman Khan go over Rs. 100 crore

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Despite Bharat, Dabangg 3 and even 2018’s Race 3 not doing well, Salman Khan is still a force to reckon with. Even if his films don’t impress, they still manage to cross the Rs. 100 crore mark for sure. And this is a fear that most other actors can’t boast about!

3. Akshay Kumar jumps into the Rs. 600 crore club

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Akshay Kumar has a super-successful year as all his four films, all different from each other – Kesari, Mission Mangal, Housefull 4 and Good Newwz – were box office successes. He finally entered the Rs. 200 crore club with Mission Mangal. While Kesari earned Rs. 154.41 crore, Mission Mangal collected Rs. 202.98 crore. Housefull 4, meanwhile, managed to accumulate Rs. 194.60 crore. The total collections of these three films stand at Rs. 551.99 crore. With Good Newwz, which released on the last Friday of 2019, expected to cross Rs. 100 crore mark, the figure would reach to more than Rs. 650 crore. Thus he’s the most profitable actor of 2019.

4. Shahid Kapoor: 2019’s biggest success story

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Shahid Kapoor was never considered to be in the big league. But surprisingly, he delivered Kabir Singh, which is 2019’s second biggest grosser, earning Rs. 278.24 crore. All of a sudden, everyone began to look up to him and his next flick, Jersey, is also expected to be one of the films to watch out for in 2020.

5. Hrithik Roshan bounces back in the big league

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Hrithik Roshan, meanwhile, was always one of the superstars but his long absence and wrong choice of films kept him away from the success he deserved. But finally, 2019 was a turnaround year for the Greek God. His first film, Super 30, seemed dicey to many in the trade but it collected a huge Rs. 146.94 crore. His other flick, War, co-starring Tiger Shroff, was a blockbuster from Day 1. It earned a huge Rs. 317.91 crore, and was thus the biggest hit of 2019. The trade is now excitedly waiting for his next and hoping that his next flick arrives in 2020 itself.

6. Vicky Kaushal makes a giant leap

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Vicky Kaushal had impressed everyone in 2018 with Raazi and Sanju. But no one thought he’ll zoom in the Rs. 200 crore club so soon! His war flick Uri - The Surgical Strike touched viewers deeply on account of it’s patriotic touch and gripping execution. Just like Shahid, even he got included in the top league.

7. Kartik Aaryan and Ayushmann Khurrana cement their position

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Kartik Aaryan proved that Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety was no fluke. His family comedy Luka Chuppi was a smashing hit. Even Pati Patni Aur Woh did very well and fulfilled all expectations of viewers, producers and exhibitors alike. Ayushmann Khurrana, meanwhile, had yet another rocking a year. He opened his account in 2019 with the hard-hitting Article 15. Despite its serious mood, it collected Rs. 65.45 crore. Dream Girl was his first complete massy film and it was loved so much that it emerged as his biggest hit. Bala, too, did super-hit business of Rs. 116.78 crore.

8. A mixed bag for John Abraham

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

John Abraham rocked in 2018 with two big hits. But in 2019, out of three, only one movie worked well. Batla House clashed with a biggie like Mission Mangal and had a serious theme. Yet, audiences were impressed with the tale and also John’s performance, resulting in business amounting to Rs. 87.22 crore. However, his spy drama Romeo Akbar Walter was found to be unimpressive, collecting just Rs. 38.83 crore. His comic caper Pagalpanti was even lower than Romeo Akbar Walter in terms of collections (Rs. 33.01 crore).

9. Another slightly underwhelming year for Varun Dhawan

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Varun Dhawan is one of the bankable stars today but in 2018, he gave two underperforming films – October and Sui Dhaaga. In 2019, he had just one release – Kalank – and it emerged as his first flop in his 12 movies old career. The multi-starrer period flick was mounted on a huge scale but earned paltry Rs. 80.35 crore.

10. The actresses too emerge successful in their own right

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

The actresses were seen playing strong roles and their presence also added to the buzz of many films. Mission Mangal was a hot product not just because of Akshay but also due to presence of Vidya Balan and Taapsee Pannu. Taapsee, along with Amitabh Bachchan, took Badla to dizzying heights. She also joined hands with Bhumi Pednekar in Saand Ki Aankh which did well, despite wrong release timing. Alia Bhatt was rocking in Gully Boy and her ‘mar jaayega tu’ dialogue in the trailer added to the hype. Rani Mukerji’s Mardaani 2 too is a box office success. Lastly, Kangana Ranaut delivered Manikarnika – The Queen Of Jhansi, which is one of the biggest female-centric grossers of Bollywood.

11. Sajid Nadiadwala gives a hattrick of Super-Hits

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala didn’t start 2019 on a great note with Kalank emerging as a debacle. But his other three films – Super 30, Chhichhore and Housefull 4 – exceeded expectations. He once again proved why he’s one of the most reputed producers today.

12. Single screen ratio comes down

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

The number of single screens is reducing with each passing year, and so is the business coming from these cinema halls. A film like War collected Rs. 317.91 crore, but from single screens, it collected less than Rs. 80 crore! So almost Rs. 230 crore collected by the film was earned in multiplexes. A similar trend was seen for other films. In case of films that were more multiplex-friendly, the single screen ratio was even less. For example, Uri - The Surgical Strike collected Rs. 245.36 crore, out of which less than Rs. 30 crore came from single screens!

13. Extreme collections of films

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Few films like Uri - The Surgical Strike, Super 30, Total Dhamaal, Luka Chuppi, Badla, Kabir Singh, Chhichhore etc collected much more than what was expected. On the other hand, films like Why Cheat India, Sonchiriya, Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota, Notebook, Arjun Patiala, Khandaani Shafakhana, The Zoya Factor, Laal Kaptaan, Satellite Shankar and The Body were absolute washouts as these couldn’t even cross the Rs. 10 crore mark.

14. Pagalpanti and Panipat – biggest loss makers

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Most of the flops of the year eventually recovered the budget through sale of satellite and digital rights. But in case of Pagalpanti and the historical Panipat, the losses are so huge that even rights from other platforms will not be enough to break even.

15. Festive period is lucrative but T&C apply

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

Like every year, the films that released on or during festivals did have a boost in their collections. But a few films also suffered. Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota released on Holi to take advantage of the festival and four-day weekend. But it backfired. Similarly, Diwali saw the release of one biggie – Housefull 4 – and two small films, Made In China and Saand Ki Aankh. Both these films would have done better had they released on some other date as audiences simply skipped one or both the movies as it became too much for them.

16. Acceptance of different films but audience still exists for mass films in abundance

#2019Recap: Salman’s supremacy, Akshay’s dominance, rise of Hrithik, Shahid, Vicky – a look at the notable box office trends

The success of unusual kind of films like The Tashkent Files, Saand Ki Aankh, Article 15, Badla, Super 30, Chhichhore and Mission Mangal showed the if audiences like a film, then these films can go anywhere. But at the same time, viewers don’t mind watching a typical escapist entertainer. 2019 also saw hits like Total Dhamaal, Housefull 4, Saaho, Dream Girl and Marjaavaan. Except for Dream Girl, all these films were thrashed by the critics and yet, all these were successful commercially.

Why Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal is the BIGGEST hit of this decade of INDIAN CINEMA!

The decade is about to end and box office-wise, a lot new benchmarks were created by various films that released in India. The Southern films made a mark in a big way, especially the 2017 flick Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. It’s Hindi version collected a mind-boggling Rs. 510.99 crore, surprising trade and industry. No Hindi film has even crossed the Rs. 400 crore mark and here was a Telugu film that did the unthinkable. Even in overseas and in other versions, it did extremely well and the total collections stand at more than Rs. 1000 crore!

Why Aamir Khan-starrer Dangal is the BIGGEST hit of this decade of INDIAN CINEMA!

However, there’s one film that has gone beyond this monstrous blockbuster. And that movie is none other than the 2016 sports drama Dangal, starring Aamir Khan in a leading role. It was the Christmas release that year and had quite a few challenges. It was not the typical Bollywood entertainer – it had Aamir playing an overweight, senior citizen for most part of the movie. There was no romantic angle. Songs are beautiful but weren’t chartbusters. But the presence of Aamir was more than enough for viewers. Over the years, he has done some of the finest films and that paid dividends when it came to Dangal.

The film opened at a huge Rs. 29.78 crore. And once the word of mouth poured in, there was no looking back. On its third day, also the Christmas day of December 25, the collections went to Rs. 42.41 crore. And it was a rare film of the decade to have collected more than Rs. 30 crore on its second Sunday (Rs. 32.04 crore). The only other film that has achieved this feat was Baahubali 2: The Conclusion, which earned Rs. 34.50 crore on Day 10. Dangal thus emerged as the biggest blockbuster of Bollywood, earning Rs. 387.38 crore in India.

In Overseas too, it did excellent business. The collections were an incredible Rs. 328.62 crore. In Taiwan, it earned Rs. 36.12 crore while in Hong Kong, it collected a huge Rs. 22.30 crore approx. And that’s not all. Dangal saw a release in China in May 2017. And here, the film saw historic collections. Aamir Khan was already a rage in this neighbouring country thanks to the popularity of his previous films like 3 Idiots, Dhoom 3 and PK. But in case of Dangal, audiences came out like never before for an Indian film. From its second week in China, Dangal began to beat heavily marketed and big budget Hollywood films like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, Wonder Woman and Alien: Covenant. It ranked number one for 16 consecutive days and in the top three for 34 straight days. At the end of its run in China, the collections stood at, believe it or not, Rs. 1227 crore! It’s difficult to say if any Indian film film in the near future would be able to break this record.

As a result, the total collections of Dangal in India and worldwide are almost Rs. 2000 crore! These are insane collections, even for Hollywood films. If a list of highest grossing sports films of all time is drawn, Dangal will rank on number 13 position, out-grossing films like Rocky series, Ford v Ferrari, Million Dollary Baby etc!

Dangal changed the life of all parties involved. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Sanya Malhotra, the lead actresses of Dangal, became quite known and signed some interesting films later on. Director Nitesh Tiwari became a force to reckon with. As for Aamir Khan, he has the last and the maximum laugh. According to reports, he earned a whopping Rs. 175 crore from the film. This is a huge pay package and not quite less than what few of the biggest Hollywood stars earn. In fact, Dwayne Johnson earned less in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs And Shaw (around Rs 142 crore), if reports are to be believed!

As the new decade begins tomorrow, here’s hoping our Indian films continue to make giant strides not just in our country but also in overseas markets. We surely have the ability and we definitely deserve it!

The decade power: Shah Rukh Khan's roller-coaster ride with UP's and DOWN's

This decade saw the rise and fall of the biggest stalwarts from the industry. While a lot has been spoken about the star-power of the actors, here's a series that analyzes in-depth, the strengths and weaknesses of the top 10 Bollywood stars, and ranks them based on their performance this decade taking into account factors like magnitude of success, opening day collections, consistency, potential, awareness, and loyal fan following. The one who scores high on all the fronts will be crowned the STAR OF THIS DECADE.

The decade power: Shah Rukh Khan's roller-coaster ride with UP's and DOWN's

Number 5 on the list is Shah Rukh Khan and here's a report card at how he fared between 2010 and 2019.

2011 to 2015

Shah Rukh Khan ended last decade with a blockbuster in the form of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and his line up back then for the coming decade looked formidable with films like My Name Is Khan and Ra. One already announced for their release in 2010 and 2011. After having a dream run in the 2000’s, the stage was set for the actor to take his superstardom a notch higher and reach an invisible position. But as they say, what goes up, comes down. Undoubtedly, he ruled the 2000’s thereby gaining the King Khan tag. However, the present decade wasn’t as promising as one expected from a superstar of Shah Rukh Khan’s stature.

While his presence ensured good to very good to even bumper start for his films through the decade until 2016, he was let down by the content, which resulted in films not recording a good trend at the box-office. From My Name Is Khan, Ra. One to Fan and Raees, Shah Rukh Khan Films always took a good initial, particularly in the metros, but the final outcome were underwhelming. Chennai Express was an exception for him this decade as the Rohit Shetty directorial did not just take a bumper start but also became the first film for the superstar to rake in over Rs 200 crore at the box-office in India.

Year – Domestic Box Office Collections

2010 - Rs. 82.52 cr [1 release]

2011 - Rs. 221 cr [1 release]

2012 - Rs. 120.85 cr [1 release]

2013 - Rs. 227.13 cr [1 release]

2014 - Rs. 203 cr [1 release]

2015 - Rs  148.72 cr [1 release]

2016 till date

Things went down the hill from 2017 as Jab Harry Met Sejal and his subsequent release Zero put a major dent in his positioning within the industry. Both the films, apart from being flops, were also a disappointment on the opening front.

The decade power: Shah Rukh Khan's roller-coaster ride with UP's and DOWN's

Year – Domestic Box Office Collections

2016 - Rs. 152.26 cr [1 release]

2017 – Rs. 201.84 cr [1 release]

2018 - Rs. 90.28 cr [1 release]

Number crunching and Analysis

And the disappointing result has got more to do with poor script selection than the stardom, as after associating himself with a series of below par subjects, the audience trust slowly started to deteriorate which even reflected in the opening of JHMS and Zero. The audience viewed both the films with an element of doubt, and waiting for the reviews and word of mouth to come in before booking their tickets. Our observation suggests that in the second half of this decade, Shah Rukh went wrong in one major front – Instead of looking for good scripts, he looked for good directors, trusted their vision which eventually fell flat in an attempt to maintain a balance between content and the aura of Shah Rukh Khan. There are directors who have the record of blending content with the image of the superstar, the prime example being Ali Abbas Zafar for what he did with Salman in Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai and Bharat.

Where does SRK go from here?

But well, let the bygones be bygones. In the years to come, we would love to see Shah Rukh drop his romantic image now, and go into the slightly content driven zone like Aamir Khan, and blend it well with the larger than life zone of Salman Khan. The audience has moved on from the romantic side of SRK as the age is catching up, however the other two zones are something that don’t age with time (We have seen it in the Southern film industry) and given the power house of talent that SRK is, we are sure, he would ace it. He can even go the Akshay Kumar way by coming with multiple films a year, which aren’t really high budgeted, thereby gaining the audience trust back and then announce big spectacles that he is known for. But knowing Shah Rukh, he would prefer to do things the way he wants to, and continue to come up with the event films. But we hope, he does it with the right subject and the right director.

Since age isn’t on his side at this point of time, it would be essential to sign on for subject that helps him to get the audience trust back. There is a massive section of audience in India who is eager to see SRK in a good film. Be assured, he still has it in him to pull the audience into the hall. His next film might not open to an overwhelming response, but the audience should come out slowly and steadily. If our sources are to be believed, a film with Atlee followed by a film with Rajkumar Hirani and Ali Abbas Zafar is in the offing for SRK and these should mark an ideal comeback for the actor thereby making a statement, “Yeh Sher Abhi Zinda Hai… Alive and Kicking.” And mind you, he is much bigger than what the stats below suggest. Just a matter of right script, and he would be back.

Final Summary at a glance

Total Collections: Rs. 1447.60 cr

Total Films: 12

Average/Film: Rs. 120.63 cr

7 reasons why Salman Khan's Dabangg 3 underperformed at the box office

Salman Khan’s much awaited cop drama, Dabangg 3 opened on 20th Dec 2019 across the globe with mixed reviews, tilted towards the negative zone from the audience and critics alike. The film was expected to be another blockbuster from Salman Khan, however the underperformance has come across as a shock to the industry as well as to the team of the film. There are several factors which went against the cop franchise, some of which were under their control and some external factors, which was nothing but sheer bad luck. Economically, the film is a profitable venture for both producers due to the sale of satellite and digital rights, while there isn’t even an issue of loss for the distributors as the film was released by Salman Khan himself. None the less, despite the profits, there is no denying the fact that it’s an underperformer of epic proportions considering that the lifetime collections would be in the same zone to what Dabangg and Dabangg 2 did almost a decade back. The lifetime collections are expected to be around the Rs. 150 crore mark.

7 reasons why Salman Khan's Dabangg 3 underperformed at the box office

Bollywood Hungama jots down 7 reasons why Dabangg 3 couldn’t perform as well as expected

1. The opening day collections of the Salman Khan starrer were majorly affected due to the CAB protests across the country. While the film raked in Rs. 24.50 crore on day one, it lost approximately 5 to 6 crore due to the protests in the country on first day. The overall dent it faced in the opening weekend was anywhere between Rs 15 to 20 crore, which is a big amount for a front loaded film like Dabangg 3. Due to the not so encouraging audience response, it couldn’t make up for the lost ground on the weekdays when the protests slowed down.

2. The Dabangg franchise is synonymous with Chartbuster music, however with Dabangg 3, Sajid-Wajid lost their plot completely. Right from Naina Lade to Yu Karke and Munna Badnaam, none of the songs could create even half the impact of what Dabangg and Dabangg 2 did. The music of Dabangg 3 aside, Salman Khan off late hasn’t been able to come up with even a decent music album, which is majorly taking a toll on the pre-release buzz of his films.  With good music, the buzz around Dabangg 3 would have easily elevated and day one figures would have been a few crores more despite the protests.

3. The makers unveiled the trailer of Dabangg 3 almost 2 months before its release and post that, couldn’t sustain the marketing campaign. The trailer, which was quite decent staying true to the franchise, became stale by the time of film’s release, and the below par music just took the buzz around the film down. With not a lot of material to push post the trailer, the marketing campaign of D3 fell flat, thereby impacting the pre-release buzz. A second trailer closer to the release might have provided some respite.

4. All the above factors would not have made a difference in the long run if the film had content that appeased the audience. The film would have made up for the losses had it commanded positive word of mouth. But alas, the film had nothing novel to offer and was riding merely on the stardom and on-screen persona of Salman Khan. While Salman Khan the actor was in terrific form through-out the film, Salman Khan the writer wasn’t as he came up with the cliché tale of revenge from the 80’s. The screenplay had nothing novel, the slow-motion shots to celebrate Salman did nothing but added onto the run-time and the direction couldn’t build the drama in some scenes that had the potential. The one-line idea of Dabangg 3, which gives a glimpse about how Chulbul Pandey became Chulbul Pandey is effective, but the makers couldn’t juice the idea to make a script that justified the charisma of the iconic character. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that the Chulbul Pandey audiences saw in Dabangg and the Chulbul Pandey that the audiences saw in Dabangg 3 are two different people with the same name, as the traits which made Chulbul an interesting personality were all taken away in third part. The lengthy run time and unwarranted obstruction by the music was also an issue. Prabhudheva’s crass humour made the audience cringe.

7 reasons why Salman Khan's Dabangg 3 underperformed at the box office

5. Salman Khan’s movies off late have also been a victim of poor supporting cast, with the actor supporting the ones who haven’t really proved their worth. Dabangg 3 was no different, and the supporting cast was a letdown. South Superstar, Sudeep had a menacing personality on screen, however his character was underdeveloped ending up being more towards the caricature zone. He could have been the bad-ass quintessential Hindi film villain.

6. The makers went wrong with their distribution strategy too as the advances opened too late for a film as big as Dabangg 3. That aside, they even goofed up in the pricing strategy by slotting the film under the mega-blockbuster slab at major cinema halls in India taking the film away from the core target audience of Salman Khan, who come from the lower, lower middle class and middle class set up. With controlled ticket pricing, the collections would have been a little better because a chunk of audience who skipped the film on hearing mixed reports due to the high ticket prices might have just dropped in if the film had not hurt their pockets. May be for Radhe, they can go with a better pricing strategy keeping their target audience in mind.

7. There was discrete negativity around the film in the media, and the team working on the film and co-ordinating with the media/press couldn’t handle that, thereby damaging the general perception. The team took a lot of wrong calls and antagonised a certain section of the media big time, which eventually got escalated to Salman Khan Films, but the damage had been done.Well we hope, Salman Khan bounces back with a bang with Radhe and takes a note of the points made above as most of them are under his control. Some minor introspection, and he would get things right again.

Shocking! Ramesh Sippy’s film Shimla Mirchi goes straight to OTT

While producers RSVP’s colourful musical extravaganza Bhangra Paa Le was wrongly being reported as going to the streaming platform, it is being released on January 3 in theatres across India, another talked-about film is not quite that lucky on the same Friday.

Ramesh Sippy's Shimla Mirch goes to OTT

Unknown to anyone associated with the film the producers Viacom 18 have decided to release Ramesh Sippy’s Shimla Mirchi, Sippy’s first directorial venture in 24 years, on Netflix. Neither the director nor the principal members of the cast Hema Malini and Rajkummar Rao were taken into confidence on the release platform.

A source close to Ramesh Sippy says the veteran director of Sholay is mighty miffed, “Viacom 18 has taken the decision (to release Shimla Mirchi on the digital platform) on their own. Rameshji had no say in the matter. He made the film in 2014 at a meagre budget of 16-17 crores. It was meant to be a small sweet romantic film set in Shimla. Rameshji handed over the film to the producers in 2015. Just why they sat on it for 4 years and why they’ve decided to not give it a theatrical release is not explained. It isn’t as if small-town romances don’t work in theatres. Viacom themselves have released several such films. Recent films like Luka Chuppi and Pati Patni Aur Woh have done well. Then why this stepmotherly treatment to  Shimla Mirchi?”

A true gentleman, Ramesh Sippy has decided to stay quiet on the matter. All he will say is, “I am very proud of Shimla Mirchi, and I’m glad it’s finally being released. The platform and format of release is the producers’ decision.”

BREAKING: CBFC passes Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak with ‘U’ certificate and ZERO cuts

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), since 4-5 years, has become too conservative or regressive at times. A lot of unfair cuts have been enforced on certain films, which has led to numerous controversies over the years. But one can’t deny that there have been also instances when the CBFC has understood the intent behind a film and have not gone for any kind of censoring in such films, despite the presence of disturbing scenes or dialogues.

BREAKING: CBFC passes Deepika Padukone-starrer Chhapaak with ‘U’ certificate and ZERO cuts

Chhapaak, one of the first films of 2020, is one such film that has escaped the wrath of CBFC. Starring Deepika Padukone, it tells the story of an acid attack survivor. The powerful trailer is laced with some scenes that can be difficult to sit through for audiences. However, thankfully, the CBFC understood the motive behind those scenes in this Meghna Gulzar-directed film. And surprisingly, they have passed the film without any cut. Moreover, it has also been awarded a ‘U’ certificate!

A source close to the project says, “Though Chhapaak releases on January 10, it was ready since a while and hence, the producers thought not to waste time and get the censor certificate soon. It would have also given them time to discuss with the CBFC, if they had raised objection to any part of the film. But to the pleasant surprise to the entire team, the CBFC members made it clear that there is no need for any kind of audio or visual cut in the film at all. Also, they felt that a film like this should be seen by all age groups. As a result, they immediately decided to give the film a ‘U’ rating.”

Chhapaak got the censor certificate on December 6, four days before its trailer was out. The total length of the film is 123 minutes.

Joker: Did Arthur Fleck kill Sophie? Deleted scene from Joaquin Phoenix & Todd Phillips' reveals Zazie Beetz' fate

Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix was undoubtedly one of the finest movies in Hollywood, this year. The Todd Phillips directorial became the highest-grossing R-rated film at the box office beating Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool franchise. While the film was critically applauded, the film left us with many questions. For instance, the fate of  Zazie Beetz' character Sophie and whether Arthur Fleck killed her or not.

Joker: Did Arthur Fleck kill Sophie? Deleted scene from Joaquin Phoenix & Todd Phillips' reveals Zazie Beetz' fate

For unversed, in Joker, Arthur begins to bond with his neighbour Sophie and they eventually start to have feelings for each other. Sophie becomes very supportive of his stand up shows and even stays by side while his mother is in hospital. Unfortunately, during a tragic reveal, Arthur breaks into Sophie's apartment only to find out that this relationship was one of his delusions. She pleads him to leave the apartment since her daughter was in the next room, sleeping. The scene next cuts off to him leaving the apartment. This left the audience thinking that he killed her.

The scene was deleted from Joker script which revealed that Sophie survived. Deadline posted the script which reveals a horrified Sophie watching Live With Murray Franklin on her television as Arthur goes rampant on Robert De Niro's show.

Here's the part from the script:

"INT. SOPHIE'S APARTMENT, LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Sophie screams and jumps to her feet horrified! Waking up GiGi who starts to cry when she sees what's on television

ANGLE ON TELEVISION, Joker gets up and walks right up to the camera. Blood sprayed over his white-painted face. Hear the studio audience still screaming, bedlam all around him.

JOKER (ON TV)

(looks straight into the camera; screams Murray's signature sign off)

GOOD NIGHT AND ALWAYS REMEMBER,--THAT'S LIFE!"

Todd Phillips had intentionally written the script of Joker so that viewers will be left with questions like whether Arthur Fleck is the real Joker or was he start of the rise of the Joker, whether Thomas Wayne had an affair with Penny among other questions. The film released on October 2, 2019, in India.
