The 10 off-screen roles of Ajay Devgn

The 10 off-screen roles of Ajay Devgn
With the forthcoming Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, Ajay Devgn hits a hundred films— as actor. Since the film will release early next year, he will have completed over 28 years, that too as one of the evergreen five superstars ( we all know the other four) who have reigned in Hindi cinema for over 25 years. The 10 off-screen roles of Ajay Devgn Ajay was as unlikely a star material as Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha were in their times. The classic looks of a hero were missing, but in the process of finding his feet, Ajay explored both the actor and star within him. Like so many others, in his earliest films, he was branded as an action hero, the new angry but young Bachchan on the block, but he quickly decided to expand his horizons while keeping his box-office image intact.  Ishq, Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, Zakham, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Deewangee, Bhoot, Masti, Raincoat, the Golmaal franchise (the first comic series to touch four films), Toonpur Ka Superrhero, Bol Bachchan, Drishyam and De De Pyaar De remain among his diverse unusual choices, and star-actor Devgn mostly dazzled in all of them. Ajay has just confirmed the role of the legendary Tansen in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Baiju Bawra, is doing the patriotic war drama Bhuj: The Pride Of India, acting in the period thriller RRR (the first superstar from Mumbai to star in a S.S. Rajamouli film) and sports biopic Maidaan besides the modern interpretation of the ancient titanic strategist Chanakya in Neeraj Pandey’s film of that name. Of course, he also reprises his own iconic role of Bajirao Singham in a cameo in Sooryavanshi. And there is Anees Bazmee, contemplating Deewangee 2, in which ‘villain’ Ajay Devgn will be infinitely more menacing. After winning multiple glories, starting with the two National awards for Zakham (1998) and The Legend Of Bhagat Singh (2002) and other trophies for categories as varied as Best Male Debut, Best Actor, Best Actor in a Negative Role, Best Actor in Comedy/Romance and even nominations for Best Supporting Actor, Ajay has little to prove— on screen! But the 100 film-old actor also keeps playing diverse roles behind the screen. So let us look at the 10 areas in which he may not have scored a hundred, but show his total involvement in cinema, to a higher and more assorted degree than his contemporaries and seniors.  1 Singer: Ajay Devgn first went behind the mike in Diljale (1996) for Anu Malik in the song ‘Shaam Hai Dhuan Dhuan’. Then came Mehbooba (2008)’s ‘Babuji Bahut Dukhta Hai’. However, both were essentially voice-overs, but the first time he went full-fledged into singing was in the title-song for Himesh Reshammiya in his co-production Bol Bachchan (2012), in which he sang the title-track with Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan! We heard his voice again in Toonpur Ka Superrhero and Son Of Sardaar. 2 Producer: Though he had unofficially been part-producer  of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha, and his family had officially made Hindustan Ki Kasam and Dil Kya Kare, Ajay turned producer officially with Raju Chacha in 2000. The experimental film collapsed, and it took him a while to go into that domain again, which he did in 2008 with U Me Aur Hum, another flop. His first success as a producer was the comic riot All The Best (2009), after which he also co-produced (as most big stars do today) his films Bol Bachchan, Son Of Sardaar, Singham Returns, Shivaay, Helicopter Eela and Total Dhamaal. Ajay also bankrolled the offbeat festival film Parched in 2015. 3 Producer – Television: Along with Misha Gautam, he produced the television series Devi featuring Madhoo (his first heroine) and Sakshi Tanwar. The series ran from 2002 to 2004. 4 Camera Operator: Though not billed within the film, buzz is that Ajay was the assistant camera operator for some of the action sequences in the 2003 Zameen. This is indeed an interesting tangent on his background—as the son of stunt coordinator Veeru Devgan! Later, he was said to have conceived the action sequences of Shivaay as well! 5 Narrator: Like the Bachchans, Ajay’s deep voice was his special asset, and he first became the narrator for Awakening (2006), a three-minute film on environmental consciousness, in which he also acted. After this, he was also the narrator in Yamla Pagla Deewana and Poster Boyz. 6 Editor: Though the three minute short does not credit him, it is said that he even tried his hand at editing Awakening! 7 Director: In 2008, Ajay ventured into direction with the medical drama U Me Aur Hum on Alzheimer’s disease. His next film as director was Shivaay, which did over a 100 crore business in India. 8 Story Writer: Th story of U Me Aur Hum was written by Ajay himself. 9 Producer—Marathi films: This is his special achievement in going beyond the realm of Hindi cinema. He first produced the successful Marathi film Vitti Dandu featuring Dilip Prabhavalkar in 2014, on what happened to a family days before Indian Independence. Last year, Ajay also produced the Nana Patekar film Aapla Manus, a thriller of sorts, which won acclaim both from the critics and the audience. 10 Visual Effects: In October 2015, Ajay began a visual effects company, NY Vfxwaala, named after his kids Nysa and Yug. his children. Among the prestige films it handled are Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Bajirao Mastani, the South’s Mersal, Dilwale, Simmba and Total Dhamaal besides Ajay’s own Shivaay for which it won the National award. As he puts it, “My name is in the Limca Book of Records for doing the first Computer Graphics in my country—for the title-track of Pyaar To Hona Hi Tha. I shot a part of the song with 123 layers. The machine was new, and there were no operators, so I used it myself! I did a lot of similar work later and I launched my company when I got boys who are fabulous at it.”

Akshay Kumar shows his sensitive emotional side with Nupur Sanon in B Praak’s heartbreaking Filhall, reminds of Namaste London

Akshay Kumar shows his sensitive emotional side with Nupur Sanon in B Praak’s heartbreaking Filhall, reminds of Namaste London
There was a time when Akshay Kumar was doing a series of action films. Then came comedies and in the recent times he has made quite a few films with a social message or political undertones. In fact his current release Housefull 4 is a comic hit already. However, there is a romantic side of his which hasn’t been seen in an out and out avtar. Akshay Kumar shows his sensitive emotional side with Nupur Sanon in B Praak’s heartbreaking Filhall, reminds of Namaste London Well, the wait is over as he has made his music video debut with ‘Filhall’, a heart-breaking romantic number, which has just been unveiled. If the initial reactions to this B Praak and Jaani created soulful song are any indication, this one is going to be a major chartbuster in very quick time from now. Lasting a good five minutes, this soulful track is accentuated further by simple yet excellent visuals, courtesy director Arvinder Khaira, who has made sure that there is an entire story to be told there. However, what makes the song special is the manner in which Akshay Kumar approaches the narrative and makes sure that the pain and void is conveyed through facial expressions and body language with eyes doing the talking. The stage and setting is that of Akshay Kumar playing a surgeon who gets an accident case of his former girlfriend, enacted by competent debutant Nupur Sanon (sister of Akshay’s Housefull 4 co-star Kriti Sanon). Even as he attends to her, old memories rekindle and it is revealed how they met and then separated. There is a twist in the tale though and one ends up wondering if the duo shall meet. Well, more can be seen on checking out the video. What can he said though is that those who loved the chemistry between Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in their romantic musical drama Namaste London would definitely trip over what Akshay Kumar and Nupur Sanon bring on board with ‘Filhall’. The love, emotions, pain, helplessness, hope and being soulmates is all conveyed exceedingly well by the two actors and the entire team associated with the song, something that makes ‘Filhall’ truly special. Rest assured, this one is in for a really long run and would have quite a few hearts truly in love beat for it in days, weeks and months to come. “This is kind of the biggest role of my life, motherhood”, says Kalki Koechlin about motherhood

“This is kind of the biggest role of my life, motherhood”, says Kalki Koechlin about motherhood
The feisty Kalki Koechlin known for her unconventional professional and personal choices speaks to Subhash K Jha about her impending motherhood and why unconventional is the conventional for her. Firstly, my congratulations. So happy that you have embraced motherhood. What prompted you to take this vital decision? Thank you. The pregnancy happened unexpectedly and we just felt we were ready to bring up a child together “This is kind of the biggest role of my life, motherhood”, says Kalki Koechlin about motherhood I believe there has been a lot of unwanted comment on social media about your decision to become a mother. Were you prepared for the backlash? How have you handled the negative vibes? I knew we still have people being judgmental about being unmarried and having a child in India, but honestly trolling on social media is nothing new or surprising and something that any celebrity deals with, so I don't take it to heart. In comparison, my neighbours, colleagues and friends have been so supportive and wonderful, and made me appreciate how many lovely people surround us on a daily basis. When and how did you meet your baby's father? And at what point of time did you decide he was the one? I am not willing to share our personal story too much as we enjoy our privacy. But we've been together for two years. He's a pianist and works with children a lot and is very patient so he always seemed to me like a natural father Workwise I am sure you will take maternity leave. How long would you be absent from work? And do you think you will miss working? I'm off for about five months. I'm sure I'll miss the creative streak of working on new material but then, this is kind of… the biggest role of my life, motherhood. So I'm enjoying this process and I'm sure I will learn a lot more in the coming months. Bala Box Office Collections Day 1 - Bala is yet another major opener for Ayushmann Khurranna, Bhumi Pednekar, Yami Gautam, Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik Of late you have been very busy with films and the OTT platform. Do you see the two media to be mutually inclusive? I think they can help each other by creating a healthy competition, where the quality of work, especially of script writing explores new territory and technique and the alternative platform will create more jobs for the ones on the fringes. We saw you in the wonderful Made In Heaven and now Bhram which revolves around your character. How comfortable were you shooting this eerie yarn and does the horror genre interest you greatly? I see this as a psychological thriller more than an outright horror, and the psyche interests me, what goes on in a mind after trauma. I got to say I'm a real fattu when it comes to watching horror, I jump at every scare. Tell me about your plans while you are on maternity leave? I think I'll read a lot more, that's something I haven't found time to do with my career so much. I'm sure though I'll look at all the classics again for movies and would love to catch up on animation especially Japanese animation with my child. There has been a lot of talk of MeToo and a change in the work ethics of the film industry. Do you notice this change and how far do you think the male gaze and attitude has changed in the film industry? Not much. In certain production teams I see an effort to put in awareness, like working on intimacy scenes and ensuring the actors are comfortable, or having a code of conduct workshop when working in the creative field. But overall perhaps it has translated more in wariness and caution than awareness and genuine change. One more thing, what prompted you to do an 'item song' in Nerkonda Paarvai? I liked Pink. They said they're doing a remake with an opening song that has a strong female performer. Bala Box Office Collections Day 1 - Bala is yet another major opener for Ayushmann Khurranna, Bhumi Pednekar, Yami Gautam, Dinesh Vijan and Amar Kaushik Looking back on your journey so far, personal and professional, is there anything you would like to change, if given a second chance? Not really. I do cringe at some of my choices and past work, but I've learnt from them, and see my failures as a valuable lesson to tackle the future.

Watch: Karan Johar does a sexually suggestive ad for a mainstream product
Karan Johar’s sexual orientation is open to endless speculation. Now to add fuel to fire he is seen openly lusting at a male model-type in an ad for a soup when at 3 am the model, all wet and vulnerable, rings Karan’s doorbell. Karan Johar is seen looking the model up and down in a manner that is decidedly not clinical. When the male lust-factor is invited inside he asks Karan for warm soup. Karan looks at his 3 am guest with eyes that suggest something far warmer than soup. Watch Karan Johar does a sexually suggestive ad for a mainstream product But finally, soup it is. The ad, the first to spotlight a homo-erotic connection between two men who bond over steaming-hot soup is interesting for the casting. Karan Johar playing Karan Johar and making his amorous orientation very clear is a sign of a growing inclination to come out clean.
A close friend of Karan, “He is not afraid to be seen being interested in men. He is not shouting about his sexual orientation from rooftops. But it is clearly on display. No ambiguity there.”

“No BAD BLOOD; Salman Khan only adhered to the sentiments and emotions of the country” - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s spokesperson on Dabangg 3

“No BAD BLOOD; Salman Khan only adhered to the sentiments and emotions of the country” - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s spokesperson on Dabangg 3
Bollywood Hungama was the first one to tell you yesterday that the ‘Naina Lade’ song of Dabangg 3 was initially sung by famous Pakistani singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. ‘Naina’ is a flagship song of the franchise and the singer had sung ‘Tere Mast Mast Do Nain’ and ‘Tore Naina Dagabaaz Re’ in Dabangg and Dabangg 2 respectively. Hence, it was natural for Salman Khan and music director duo Sajid-Wajid to rope in Rahat for the ‘Naina’ track in the third instalment as well. The song was recorded successfully, after which the relations strained between India and Pakistan. As a result, Salman Khan and the entire Dabangg 3 team decided to drop his voice. He was then replaced by Javed Ali. “No BAD BLOOD; Salman Khan only adhered to the sentiments and emotions of the country” - Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s spokesperson on Dabangg 3 It has now come to light that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan understood why Salman Khan took this decision of replacing his voice and has no hard feelings. Rahat’s producer and global promoter Salman Ahmed confirmed this fact to Pakistani newspaper Dawn and also revealed that Rahat Fateh Ali Khan sung not one, but two songs for Dabangg 3. “Basically two songs were recorded for Dabangg 3. Everyone wanted the songs and they're really good. This song ‘Naina’ is lovely and everyone misses the fact that Rahat sahab's version couldn't go on. But at the end of the day of course he (Salman Khan) has to see the interests of his country, so I don’t think the artist has choices there given the circumstances,” says Salman Ahmed. Salman Ahmed further adds, “If the song (Rahat’s version) would’ve been released, there’d be controversies, the film would have been affected and nobody wants that. That’s why we didn’t do the song,” and also makes it clear, “It’s not bad blood. It’s not like Salman Khan purposely dropped the song.” Salman Ahmed signed off by stating, “At this moment, (given) the emotions and sentiments of that industry and the country, he (Salman) only adhered to them. Otherwise we all know there are people who want a reason to damage Salman Khan’s reputation by creating a fuss and having needless controversies. There’s no bad blood, nothing intentional. I would say it is more circumstantial than anything else and that’s about it.” Also Read: Post dropping Rahat Fateh Ali Khan makers rope in Javed Ali for Salman Khan starrer Dabangg 3

50 years of Amitabh Bachchan in cinema: 8 LESSER KNOWN trivia of his debut film Saat Hindustani
Netizens and Bollywood fans regularly celebrate anniversaries of important films and also of actors. But today marks the day when one of the greatest superstars of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan, began his acting journey, and that too 50 years ago! Unlike his contemporaries, he continues to work on a regular basis. Since 1997, there has been not a single year when he didn’t have a release. Needless to say, this is a feat that very few actors in the world can boast of! 50 years of Amitabh Bachchan in cinema 8 LESSER KNOWN trivia of his debut film Saat Hindustani Amitabh Bachchan, before starting his acting career, had done the voiceover in Mrinal Sen’s Bhuvan Shome, which released on May 12, 1969. His first film, Saat Hindustani, hit the theatres on November 7, 1969 and it turned out to be his acting debut for which he even got a National Award. Directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, it tells the heroic story of seven Indians who attempt to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial rule. In this Bollywood Hungama special feature, we give you some not-so-known trivia about the film, with regards to Amitabh Bachchan: 1. Amitabh Bachchan was working in Kolkata while trying his hand at acting. When Khwaja Ahmed Abbas called him for the film, the actor came down from the City Of Joy after resigning from his job. Khwaja saab was astonished and asked him, “You mean to say that you resigned a job of sixteen hundred rupees a month, just on the chance of getting this role! Suppose we can’t give the role to you?” To which Big B replied, “One has to take such chances.” So happy was Khwaja Ahmed Abbas that he said, “The role is yours.” 2. Amitabh Bachchan was offered Rs. 5000 for the part. The day he signed the film was February 15, 1969. 3. Amitabh Bachchan in a Bollywood Hungama exclusive interview on the occasion of his 70th birthday in 2012 revealed that it was his brother Ajitabh who was already posted in Mumbai and who managed to find out that Khwaja Ahmed Abbas was looking for a new face. That’s how Khwaja Ahmed Abbas was informed of Big B. Interestingly, Khwaja Ahmed Abbas knew Amitabh’s father the great poet Harivanshrai Bachchan and initially, he had no idea that the actor was his son. When he found out, he rang up Harivanshrai Bachchan to confirm whether the actor had taken his consent to join the movies.
4. The role played by Amitabh Bachchan was initially offered to Tinnu Anand. However, Tinnu Anand declined the part as he was getting a chance to assist the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. And it was Tinnu Anand who was given Big B’s photographs and who was told to hand it over to Khwaja Ahmed Abbas. The writer-director had a very bad temper and he considered Tinnu like his son. As a result, Tinnu was asked to do the needful. 5. Amitabh Bachchan today is known for his dedication and discipline to his craft and he had these qualities right from the beginning. Veteran make-up artist Pandhari Juker in an interview once said, “For his first film, Saat Hindustani, I had made him a beard which didn’t stick easily. Gluing each strand of hair to his chin was a tedious process. Since I had to go away for three-to-four days, he took pains to sleep and bathe in a fashion that did not disturb the beard.” 6. Amitabh Bachchan in a Bollywood Hungama exclusive interview in May 2015 talked highly of Khwaja Ahmed Abbas and his experience of working on Saat Hindustani. He said, “We called Abbas saab ‘mamujaan’ and he was an exceptional human being, much bigger than his status as a writer and director. When we were shooting for Saat Hindustani, we’ll all travel together, in third class. We stayed in government circuit houses, which were not so well equipped. The whole unit would sleep on the floor in one all. Cameraman, spotboys, artists and Abbas saab – all together! They were no tubelights then. He would light a lantern and write or go through the scenes of the next day. It was amazing. Where do you find people like that?
7. A film historian SMM Ausaja revealed that Saat Hindustani had a limited release in Mumbai that too only in matinee shows. Moreover, it released in Maximum City many months after it released in Delhi. 8. Before bagging Saat Hindustani, Amitabh Bachchan had sent his photographs to the Filmfare Talent Hunt Content but he was rejected at the preliminary round. He narrated this experience to his father, to which Harivanshrai Bachchan told Big B, “Kisi ghar ke andar ghusna ho aur darwaza ho agar bandh, toh deewar faand kar ke andar chale jaana chahiye” (if you want to enter a house and the door is locked, then you must climb the wall and make your way in). The megastar revealed this trivia on the November 7, 2019 episode of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati 11’ which was also dedicated to Amitabh’s 50 years in cinema.
