EXCLUSIVE: “Akshay Kumar had too many films and is overexposed” says Taran Adarsh; advices actor to space out his releases

With the Hindi cinema failing to hold its ground at the box office, trade has grown concerned towards the future of these films. In a hearty conversation with Bollywood Hungama, trade analyst Taran Adarsh discussed about the current scenario of the industry as he also opened up what worked and what didn’t work in favour of the actors at the box office. One of the heroes he spoke about was Akshay Kumar, who has been facing several hurdles at the box office as his 2022 releases couldn’t make a mark at the box office.

In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, trade analyst Taran Adarsh said, "Lot of films, overexposure, saal mein 4-5 filmein. Ek waqt tha jab Akshay ke woh filmein chal jaati thi. ab filmein nahi chali. Space out karna bahut zaruri hai... pichle saal 4 filmein lagi thi theatre mein aur ek OTT pe. Aap kitne bhi kaabil actor kyun na ho par roz roz biryani bhi achhi nahi lagti. (In a year, there are 4-5 films. There was a time when all of Akshay’s films would work. Now his films are not working. It is important for him to space out. In the past year, his four films released in theatre and one on OTT. No matter how capable you are as an actor, we cannot eat biryani every day right?).

The trade analyst advised that Akshay Kumar needs to space out the releases. He added, “Thoda space out karein. Ek waqt tha jab hum bahut saare filmein dekhte te. Amitabh Bachchan ki cheh picturein ek saath - sab silver jubilee, golden jubilee, 25-50-75 hafte chalti rehti hai. tab wahi entertainment hota tha. ab logon ke paas OTT, TV, social media hai jo aapko thoroughly entertained rakhta hai. (He should space out. There was a time when we would watch a lot of films. Like six of Amitabh Bachchan films would release in a year and they would run like for 25 to 75 weeks. Because at that time, it was the only source of entertainment. But now, people have OTT, TV, social media etc. to keep them thoroughly entertained).”

However, Taran Adarsh did assert that the actor would soon be back in form. “Akshay Kumar will surely bounce back. He is a competent actor which he has proved in the past with numbers also. It is just a question of one good Friday. But it is very important for him to space out,” he concluded.

EXPLOSIVE: Anubhav Sinha THUNDERS: “The censor experience of Bheed and Afwaah hasn’t been great. It was almost UNFAIR. The only option to seek justice is to go to the courts. But that is an expensive and time-consuming process”

In the first five months of 2023, Anubhav Sinha managed to release as many as three films in cinemas. Faraaz, directed by Hansal Mehta, was the first release. This was followed by his directorial venture, Bheed, based on the sufferings of the migrants in the lockdown. Afwaah, directed by Sudhir Mishra, was recently released. These films didn’t click at the box office but got massive acclaim from most moviegoers and critics. Anubhav Sinha was in a relaxed mood as he spoke exclusively with Bollywood Hungama about these films, being one of the few brave voices in the industry and a lot more.

Your film, Afwaah, directed by Sudhir Mishra, was released on May 5. Interestingly, I have not come across a single person who has not liked the film. It got a unanimous positive response… It’s beautiful to know. I wish more people had gone to the theatres to see it. But people are not going to the cinemas. What to do?

Do you feel Afwaah’s release in cinemas was too limited? Yes, it was less than what should have ideally been. But then releasing a film has become so expensive, which is a discussion for another day. So yes, it wasn’t as many shows and as many screens as I would have liked. I guess, every film has its economics.

Also, it’s not like the shows were running packed on the first day of release. If there was an encouraging response from people on the release day, then increasing the number of shows would have been a phone call away. Unlike the good old days when we had to send physical prints, now it’s easier. Sadly, the theatrical response, whether it is for Afwaah or Bheed, wasn’t as encouraging that shows could be increased from Saturday onwards.

I guess it takes time for word to spread… That’s not practical. If a film is running with three shows on a Friday and if those films are not doing well, the exhibitor doesn’t even ask you. He’ll simply reduce the show count. It’s beyond my control.

Faraaz also didn’t do well in cinemas but got a new lease of life on Netflix. Do you think that the same would happen with Bheed and Afwaah? I hope so, with my fingers crossed. There was so much conversation around Bheed. It received fantastic reviews and response from those who saw it. So, I am hoping it gets viewership (on OTT).

Post-pandemic, do you feel the box-office scenario has changed? Thappad (2020) was released just before the lockdown and it collected Rs. 30 crores, despite the conventional subject. Do you feel Bheed and Afwaah would have fared better at the box office before 2020? I don’t know. I keep asking other people these days, ‘If we release Article 15 (2019) now, will it work the way it did in 2019?’ Nobody has the answer. No one knows what’s going on!

2 years ago, you said in an interview that the Censor Board has been kind to you… Not lately though!

I went through the cut list of both Afwaah and Bheed. Afwaah suffered innumerable cuts. As for Bheed, its list of cuts was shocking. Words like ‘Tablighi Jamaat’, ‘Corona Jihad’ etc. were deleted though they were important to the film’s narrative. Your thoughts?  The censor experience of Bheed and Afwaah hasn’t been great. It was almost unfair.

And now you cannot even go to the FCAT (Film Certification Appellate Tribunal) aka the tribunal… …Because there’s no tribunal. The biggest tragedy behind removing the tribunal is that now the only option to seek justice is to go to the courts. But going to court is so expensive and time-consuming. You have no control over when the hearing will be done or when the decision will be given. Even Faraaz went through its own journey of court cases. We never used it to publicize our film. And it was awfully expensive.

Was Afwaah delayed because of the Censor process? It was supposed to be released in March… Yes. Afwaah and Bheed were almost together at the CBFC. We had to finish one battle first and then proceed to the other.

Do these experiences stress you out? Going forward, will you still make the film you want to make? Oh yes. I’ve been like this for 9 years!

It is said that there’s a lot of emphasis on the box office. If a film doesn’t work, it doesn’t get the respect… I don’t agree. On the contrary, a little later in time, it absolutely ceases to matter ki film ne box office pe kitna kiya tha. Uske baad film ki izzat zinda rehti hai. Do you know how much my first film Tum Bin (2001) collected? It ran in cinemas only for a week.

Maybe that was a different time. I am talking about the present-day scenario… No. During those days, films would run for 15-20 weeks. There were no theatres for us. Also, Sholay (1975) did not do well in the first week. But those were the days when the exhibitors would hold on to the film. They would wait for the audience to get a whiff of what the film is. Nowadays, it’s very instant. If the 6 o’clock show doesn’t work, the theatre might cancel the 9 o’clock show. So, the exhibition sector has to reinvent itself. We have said enough about the kinds of films being made. But we haven’t talked about the exhibition, the cost of releasing a film, the method of the exhibition and some sort of monopoly in the exhibition sector.

Recently, there were reports of challenges in the exhibition sector and PVR and Inox shutting down around 50 cinemas… Yes. The exhibition sector will have to work with the production sector. We cannot not hold hands. We will have to hold hands.

Do you know Mulk (2018) didn’t go great at the box office? It did just about fine. But in the life of a film, the box office is the most minuscule factor that people remember. People would remember a film for its dialogue more than the box office. I have seen people say, ‘Yaar, who film mein kya dialogue tha’ or ‘Woh film mein kya gaana tha’ and not ‘Woh film ka kya box office tha’! So a little later in the life of a film, the weekend is immaterial. What’s important is how long the people will continue to relate to that film. That timelessness of an art is what matters.

What next? I don’t know. I am working on some stories. I have been so busy. I just released Afwaah and now I will sit out and figure out

You have an anthology coming up. Will it be out in cinemas or on OTT? Yes. It’s called Be Positive. It’ll be out on digital. It was never meant to be a theatrical release.

When will it be released? We are figuring it out.

Do you think that in the days to come, it’ll be more difficult for filmmakers like you to have your own voice? We’ll see. We’ll take it as it comes. Every time we move from one film to another, these talks come up. But then you can’t pre-empt a tragedy. You can only keep guessing and cross the bridge when we get there. Will I change my route to avoid the bridge? No. I would cross that bridge and then we’ll see.

1 Year of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 EXCLUSIVE: Murad Khetani reveals that several people thanked the team of Kartik Aaryan-starrer for reviving the industry; reveals that Tara Sutaria’s Apurva will release directly on Disney+ Hotstar; BREAKS silence on Animal-Gadar 2 clash

The blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) completed one year on May 20. The Kartik Aaryan-Kiara Advani-Tabu starrer came at a time when the Bollywood industry was desperate for a hit. The horror comedy was released with a lot of expectations but by collecting Rs. 185.92 crores, it spread jubilation in the industry. On Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’s first anniversary, we spoke to its producer Murad Khetani about the film and a lot more.

How do you look back at Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2? It came at a very crucial time… It’s a very special film because the situation at that time was pretty bad. It was truly depressing. And for this film to do such business at that point and get immense love from the audiences was truly commendable. It was an experience of a lifetime if you ask me. So many people thanked us and told us ‘Aapki film ne industry ko revive kar diya’.

What do you think worked in favour of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2? It was a complete entertainer and that’s something I strive for in every film. It had a perfect balance of emotions, comedy, horror, music etc. Audiences always crave for an entertainment package. It waits for such films. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, I believe, fits the bill.

The pandemic has confirmed the fact that the public wants to see complete entertainers. They will reject films, which are not up to, their expectations or even films that are preachy. They want entertainment in abundance.

All your films, in fact, have been complete entertainers and boasted of quality scripts. One of your most underrated films was Satellite Shankar (2019). It’s surely one of the best films in recent times. Did it feel bad that it didn’t do well despite being so touching and moving? It’s a part and parcel of this business. We can’t expect all our films to work. Of course, we feel bad (when films fail). After all, we work hard on all our films, be it Satellite Shankar or Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2. When films don’t click, we have no option but to move on and perhaps work harder.

How did you come into this business? Not much is known about your journey… My first film was The Shaukeens (2014). I was into real estate before and always wanted to be a producer. Filmon ka shauq toh bachpan se raha hai. With The Shaukeens, I began my journey. I had a couple of friends here and they supported me a lot. I learnt as I moved forward. Acche log milte gaye and I kept moving and I kept making films.

Speaking of your forthcoming film, your next release will be Animal… Yes, and there will be one more release around the same time. It’s called Apurva and it stars Tara Sutaria. It’ll release on Disney+ Hotstar. This was always planned as a digital release. It’s not like we made the film for a theatrical release and then decided to go on OTT. It is expected to release between July and September.

Then one film will go on floors around July or August. We’ll soon make an announcement.

Speaking of Animal, it’s one of the most anticipated films of 2023 thanks to its casting. Also, it’s directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, who delivered the monstrous blockbuster, Kabir Singh (2019), which was also co-produced by you. What can audiences expect from Animal? The only thing I can share is that it’s going to be a very good film. It has shaped up really well. Even we are excited about it.

Kabir Singh is a rare blockbuster to collect Rs. 200 crores, despite the ‘A’ certificate. The bloodshed seen on Animal’s poster makes it clear that it’s going to be quite violent. Will you be opting for an adults-only certificate for Animal as well? Let the Censor Board decide!

Will it release on August 11 or will it be postponed, as speculated by some? It will release on August 11, as scheduled. There’s no change in its release date.

Are you worried about clashing with Gadar 2? It’s a big week and I believe there’s space for two big films to co-exist. So, we are not worried about the clash.

Last year, you confirmed that you have the remake rights to Thalapathy Vijay’s 2021 blockbuster Master. Is there any update on this front? Yes, I do plan to remake Master but not right away. There’s no update.

It is also said that you will co-produce No Entry 2… That’s not true. I am not a part of the film…

Is there anything else in the pipeline? There are a few projects. But the times that we are living in, filmein soch samaj ke banani padti hai. We have to be very careful and choosy.

We hope you keep doing smaller films with great concepts like Satellite Shankar… Yes, definitely. We’ll keep doing it. Like I have backed Apurva as I loved the script. I felt that it should be made and should be released on a digital platform because post-pandemic, it’s difficult to predict the box office scenario. So going forward, if we get such scripts, we’ll try and make it for OTT.

Wouldn't you like to bring such films to cinemas first? We would love to come to cinemas. But hopefully, time sahi ho jaaye. Ultimately, we make films for audiences. They should come to cinemas for all kinds of films.

It will be an investigative fantasy drama set at ZEE5 which will span across three decades and timelines – 1990, 2001 and 2016. The series Gyaarah Gyaarah is directed by Pagglait fame Umesh Bisht and co-written by Puja Banerji and Sunjoy Shekhar.

The K-drama is one of the most critically acclaimed drams of all time. As per Asian Wiki, Signal narrates the story of “Park Hae Yeong, who was a student in elementary school at the time, who saw a young girl being abducted on her way home from school fifteen years ago. The girl was discovered dead a few days later, but the authorities were unable to identify the killer. Hae Yeong eventually developed a distrust for the police. Hae Yeong is currently a police officer and criminal profiler after fifteen years. He comes across a walkie-talkie one day, which enables him to communicate with Detective Lee Jae Han who is in the past. Afterwards, in an effort to investigate unsolved crimes, police officers Cha So Hyun, Hae Yeong, and Jae Han set out on a voyage.”

The criminal case depicted in Signal is reportedly inspired by a true incident which occurred in South Korea’s Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province over the course of 1986 – 1991. Reports had stated that 10 women were allegedly raped and murdered within the 2 km radius of the province with victims ranging from a 13-year-old school girl to a 71-year-old grandmother. Anurag Kashyap reveals that he reached out to Kennedy namesake Chiyaan Vikram for the film; says, “He never responded”

Anurag Kashyap recently attended the Festival De Cannes 2023 for the premiere of his film Kennedy starring Rahul Bhat and Sunny Leone. He later opened up about Ugly actor Rahul Bhat coming on board adding, “So then, I reached out to Rahul. I said 'Read it'. His reaction, his response was enthusiastic. And not like as an actor. And he was like, 'Yeh Kaun kar raha hai (Who is doing this role)?' I said, 'Karega (Will you do it)?' He said 'Me?' I said, 'Yes, but you will have to give it all'. And he was supposed to do some films. He gave eight months of his life to Kennedy."

Bollywood actor Sara Ali Khan recently made her Cannes Film Festival debut. At the French Riviera, the actress talked about making connections in the industry independently instead of using her father Saif Ali Khan and mother Amrita Singh’s help.

In an interview with Film Companion, Sara Ali Khan said that her mother rarely had friends in the industry. “Every relationship I have established in the film fraternity has been a very independent equation, which is very nice because I have never felt the pressure to follow through with my father’s friends or my mother’s friends,” Sara said.

She added, “She (Amrita) says, ‘Everyone has their own journey, and you should chalk out your own and this is not for me.'”

Mum is happy to be on her own and not explore much. My father has the need to explore, travel, eat different kinds of food, and see the whole world. Mom is the epitome of strings, she is emotionally very strong. She sleeps with a lot of peace. I don’t think I have her peace as yet. But, both of us are emotional beings at the core. She has never pretended to be somebody that she is not.”

Jugal Hansraj says he was labelled as “jinx” amid film setbacks; reflects on facing criticism and personal jibes

Jugal Hansraj gained fame as a child actor in the acclaimed film Masoom, displaying his natural talent and screen presence. The actor went on to portray diverse characters in diverse movies. However, there was a phase, when he had to face failure. Recently, he recalled the struggles of his initial days while stating that he was called a “jinx.”

In a conversation with the Times Of India, the Mohabbatein actor asserted, “Dealing with the failure of my movies was incredibly difficult. Not only did I face criticism from media reviewers, but they also attacked me personally. I've been called various names and labelled as a jinx. Moreover, the numerous films that never even started production led people to mock me. They would make comments like, ‘Oh it's about time Jugal attends mahurats of his own films,’ when I attended events for other movies.”

The actor-turned-author shared that in the past, he would feel deeply upset when his projects were cancelled, sometimes even resulting in tears. However, as he grew older, he became more resilient to such disappointments. When informed that a film he had signed on for was no longer happening, he would politely thank the caller and end the conversation. Over time, he developed a sense of detachment from these situations. Despite this resilience, he admitted that it can still be difficult to deal with negative feedback about his work, particularly after investing significant effort into it.

The Papa Kehte Hain actor added, “Sometimes, people take it personally, which is unnecessary. It's just a movie, and one can either like it or not without resorting to personal attacks. The industry is tough, and people can be harsh and cruel, but that's the reality one must accept when entering this field.”

He concluded by saying, “It was challenging because even the people you consider friendly or nice to you can change based on the success or failure of your movies. Some individuals only come back when things are going well. That's just how some people are, although not everyone.”
