The film which is based on the 2011 Marathi language film Mala Aai Vahhaychy has been written by Rohan Shankar along with Laxman Utekar. After the release of the film, Rohan Shankar, who also penned the dialogues of the film, spoke to Bollywood Hungama about Mimi and his process of writing. Rohan Shankar is also the writer behind the films Luka Chuppi and Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari.

EXCLUSIVE: “The original story has the emotions at the right place”- Mimi writer Rohan Shankar

Why surrogacy?

There was no particular reason to choose such a subject. Maddock had taken the rights of the Marathi film- Mala Aai Vhhaychy. So it so happened that Laxman Utekar sir once shared an interesting idea with me about an adaptation of that story, so I liked it and started working on it with a new approach.

Kriti Sanon has constantly exhibited extreme passion and confidence while talking about Mimi and was confident that it would surprise the audience. How important is it for a writer to get an actor who believes in the script to this extent?

It's very important for a writer to get an actor who believes in the script because at the end filmmaking is a collaborative effort, without the co-existence of dedication among the two, something like this cannot be made. It's also important because as a writer I had made a sketch for the actor and now it's the actor's duty to do justice to the role and without dedication and faith in the script it cannot happen.

How was it working with Laxman Utekar for the third time? What is your working equation like?

It always feels great while collaborating with Laxman sir. I have done 4 films and 3 of them are with Laxman Sir. I have learned a lot from him. Our understanding of how we work has become stronger since the day we started for our first film together. We understand each other so well. As a writer, I always feel that when a director understands your vision; it helps us to portray the script onscreen in the best manner.

The film is based on Mala Aai Vahhaychy which was released in 2011. When you make it for a different and larger audience in current times, what are the specific changes you focused on?

The original story had emotions in the right place. But when you are making a film for a larger audience in current times, you need to take care of the setting, dialogues and you have to frame your characters in such a way that people to a large extent can relate to the same. Indian audiences really like quirky characters and dialogues, so we had to make sure that everything from the setting to the dialogue, the humour, and the characters should be different from the former. So we adapted the story in our own way.

How do you write your characters? Do you derive inspiration from real life?

I always derive inspiration from real-life characters, so that the film or the project looks more relatable to the audience. Be it Luka Chuppi, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari or Mimi, they are full of many characters which the audience encounter in their daily life. For example, the character of Pankaj ji in Luka Chuppi was very relatable, as everyone must have encountered some neighbour who always tries to nag people's homely affairs or someone who is a mast maula. Also, a friend like Shama in Mimi, who stands with us no matter what we do.

The topic of surrogacy and motherhood is very personal to women. While writing the script, did you also talk to women who have undergone surrogacy as part of research?

Yes, we made sure that we got all the facts correct. We did our research on the surrogacy laws, talked to some people about the experience of going through the procedure of surrogacy, and we also consulted a few doctors and gynecologists. When you are talking about a subject that would reflect on society you can't be superficial in showing the reality.

There have been discussions about how Mimi could have easily abandoned her dreams when she opted to be a surrogate to fulfill her dream of becoming a star. Your thoughts?

Sometimes, each of us may have to sacrifice something because of the conditions around us. In Mimi's condition it was more like either she has to live the phase of motherhood or she can pursue her dreams. And she chose to become a mother, and you can't deny that even if the child was someone else's but Mimi carried the baby in her womb for 9 months. So lastly, she realized that it was not easy for her to part from the kid.

You have penned stories on live-in relationships and surrogacy. When you highlight modern topics such as these with what intention do you write the stories. Is it for educating, entertaining, or reflecting on society?

I like writing on bold topics and stories. I love exploring new set-ups and worlds. I believe cinema is the most influential medium in the world. If I am getting an opportunity to make one, I would love to say a few things and introduce some new progressive ideas to the world through my writing, mostly in a light-hearted non-preachy way. But the thought should not be out of context or alien from the story. It should flow with the story.

What is the next taboo topic that you plan on talking about? What are the other kinds of genres you would like to explore?

My upcoming movie Helmet revolves around the topic of "condoms". I would really like to experiment with the horror genre in India.

Do you plan on taking up direction anytime soon?

I do have plans for direction but not at the moment. I am developing a story but again it’s too soon to talk about that.

7 Unknown facts about the late Meena Kumari

1. Meena Kumari loved the scent of mogras. If you wanted her as a friend you could try giving her mogra flowers. You would have seen her face light up with pleasure. She was not much into worldly things and gave away all her possessions to her relatives and died in the servant’s quarter of a mansion she gifted to her sister.

7 Unknown facts about the late Meena Kumari

2. Meenaji couldn’t dance to save her life in Pakeezah. But she loved to sing and has recorded an entire album of her own poetry I Write I Recite composed by Khayyam. In her films she wanted only Lata Mangeshkar to sing for her. Lataji recalls her association with the legendary actress. “I remember one day she called and introduced herself. She wanted me to come and sing in her house. I declined saying I don’t sing for private functions. She never held that incident against me. She often used to land up at the recording studio for my songs. One day for a recording for Hemant Kumar I had washed my hair and left it open. Meena Kumari who was very proud of her hair , looked at my hair and exclaimed, ‘Kitne lambe baal hain aapke!’ I told her I had never cut my hair in my life. My voice used to match her to perfection. What an artiste and what a fine humanbeing! During the making of Pakeezah (which went on for a good 20 years) Kamal Amrohi who used to treat me like a daughter invited me home for song rehearsals. Meena Kumari was practicing her steps for my songs in Pakeezah. Meena turned to me and said, “When you sing I don’t have to make any effort to act.”

I cherish that compliment. Sadhana had said something similar to me once. Meena Kumari often called to chat. She seemed very unhappy with her life. I met her for the Filmfare awards in 1968. She had become thin and pale. That year I had given up the awards, and she said, ‘It’s like the queen abdicating her throne.’ Later I came to know she was extremely ill. When I reached her place with flowers she looked very ill. She looked at me and said, ‘Allah, aap yahan aaye, main badi khush-kismat hoon.’ We chatted. She asked me for tea, though I sensed she was in no position to offer me anything except her warmth in that condition. She passed away a little later. And then Pakeezah became a legend. Meena Kumari was so ill she couldn’t dance for the film. But I cherish my songs for her in that film.

3. Not much of a dancer, Meena Kumari was too frail to even stand straight for the climactic song and dance in Pakeezah (Aaj hum apne duawon ka asar dekhenge). Kamal Amrohi had to get a body-double Padma Khanna to dance for Meena Kumari.

7 Unknown facts about the late Meena Kumari

4. She had injured the little finger of her hand in a car accident early in her life. In all her films she kept the left hand with the injured finger covered with her saree or a dupatta. Directors would tell her to not hide the finger as it took nothing away from her beauty and screen presence. But she remained self-conscious about her injury till her last.

5. She was rumoured to have shared intense romantic relationships with Gulzar and Dharmendra, though neither men has ever spoken about their association. But she agreed to do Gulzar’s Mere Apne for almost no fee. As for Dharmendra, proof of Meenaji’s extra-marital relationship lies in her ex-husband’s film Razia Sultan where he cast Dharmendra and then painted him black from head to toe on screen. It is said this was Amrohi’s revenge on the man who snatched his wife’s attention and affection. Meena Kumari supported the young struggling Dharmendra financially and emotionally. A formidable actress and a big box-office draw, she insisted that producers who wanted her for their films sign Dharmendra opposite her. Some of these films that she did only to boost Dharmendra’s career like Chandan Ka Palna, Main Bhi Ladki Hoon, Baharon Ki Manzil and Purnima were so awful they brought the actress’ reputation down by many pegs.

6. Meena Kumari’s most celebrated film is Pakeezah. But her finest film and performance was in Guru Dutt’s Pakeezah. The legendary actress played the neglected alcoholic wife of a feudal family. The role was offered to famous photographer Jitendra Arya’s wife Chhaya Arya. Eventually she was rejected. Meena Kumari had missed the opportunity to play a Bengali woman in Devdas. She pined to play a Bengali housewife and had her heart set on the role of Choti Malkin in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. But Meenaji’s husband Kamal Amrohi asked for a price for his wife that Guru Dutt couldn’t afford. Meenaji personally intervened to sort out the matter.

7. Contrary to belief, Meena Kumari’s farewell film was not Pakeezah but Sawan Kumar Tak’s Gomti Ke Kinare where again she played a tawaif. She shot the film through her failing health as a favour to the debutant director. Ironically in this film Meenaji sang Majrooh Sultanpuri’s immortal lyrics which reflected on her exploitation by those whom she trusted and loved: ‘Aaj Toh Meri Hansi Udai Jaise Bhi Chaha Pukara Kal Jo Mujhe Inn Galiyon Mein Laya Wohbhi Ttha Haath Tumhara’….RIP, Meena ji.

Friendship Day special: 5 songs celebrating the spirit of friendship

1. ‘Diye Jalte Hain Phool Khilte Hain, Badi Mushkil Se Magar Duniya Mein Dost Milte Hain’ (Namak Haram): This film about a friendship across the class-divide starred two actors who couldn’t stand each other in real life. Never mind. That’s what acting is about. When Rajesh Khanna gives screen-buddy Amitabh Bachchan those bromantic looks and sings Anand Bakshi’s elegantly affectionate lyrics Jab jiss waqt kissika yaar juda hota hai kuch na pucho yaaron dil ka haal bura hota hai, the world seems like such a nicer place. R .D Burman composed the dosti ditty straight from the heart. Apparently he composed the song keeping in mind his great friendship with Rajesh Khanna.

Friendship Day special: 5 songs celebrating the spirit of friendship

2. ‘Ram Kare Allah Kare Teri Meri Dosti Bani Rahe’ (Aap Ke Deewane): Best friends Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan had no problem emoting their mutual affection to Rajesh Roshan’s composition. This film had two other lovely dosti songs ‘Tumko Khush Dekh Kar’ bringing the two giants Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar together, and ‘Apni Khushiyan Tujhko De Doon’ where Kishoreda had to be replaced by his son Amit after his death.

3. ‘Bane Chahe Dushman Zamana Hamara Salaamat Rahe Dostana Hamara’ (Dostana): A rare song bringing arch-rivals Mohd Rafi and Kishore Kumar together. Rafi’s fans believed the Kishore Kumar wave after Aradhana wiped out Rafi’s supremacy. Laxmikant-Pyarelal coaxed the singing stalwarts to come together once again for this rumbustious celebration of friendship. On screen it was Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha faking friendship when in fact they couldn’t stand each other.

4. ‘Yeh Dosti Hum Nahin Chhodenge’ (Sholay): Perhaps the single-most popular friendship song in Hindi films, a lot of gay interpretations have been imputed to the song and its filming. But director Ramesh Sippy vouches for his heroes’ heterosexuality. Jai and Veeru were definitely not gay, although they loved one another to death, literally. This song had Kishore Kumar singing for Dharmendra and Manna Dey for Amitabh Bachchan.

5. ‘Yaari Hai Imaan Mera Yaar Mera Zindagi’ (Zanjeer): Amitabh Bachchan had no songs to sing in this cop’s saga. But Pran who played Mr B’s Pathan buddy, pulled out all stops for this ebullient ode to friendship which Manna Dey sang with glorious gusto. Pran danced around his dost with infectious energy. The song is a rarity in that became a chart-topper although it was not filmed on the leading man. That’s the power of a toast to the dost.
