TRIVIA TUNES: Kishore Kumar missing a fraction of a beat, Pritam choosing Dhoom 3 over Ek Tha Tiger, and 8 other stories from the world of music

Music is an integral part of the Indian film industry and possibly one of the most distinguishing factors that set it apart from world cinema. While our music continues to help people tap onto their emotions, there are several stories about these songs and their creators that will astonish you and some that will add on to the experience you get each time you tune into your favourite music.

So, here’s us, at Bollywood Hungama, bringing to you some of the lesser-known facts of the world of music-

Before his comeback with Heropanti 2, Mehboob wrote 3 unheard songs-
Mehboob, the lyricist of films as varied as Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Bombay, Rangeela and Desh Devi, has staged a comeback with his songs in Heropanti 2. Reports claim that he last wrote for Yuva in 2004, but the fact is that he did write three tracks for a small film called 31st October as late as October 2016. Incidentally, these three songs were sung by Sonu Nigam, Mohammed Salamat and Javed Ali, all of who sing in the Mohammed Rafi mould.

With Amit Kumar being stuck at the passport office, Roopkumar Rathod got his film break-
The eminent singer, Roopkumar Rathod, got his film break in a piquant way. He had impressed filmmaker K. Sashilaal Nair with his skills and when a song, ‘Kitne jaldi yeh mulaqaat’ was to be recorded for the latter’s Angaar (1992), Amit Kumar, who was to sing it with Lata Mangeshkar, was held up at the passport office. Mobiles had not come in and after Lata sang her portion and left the studio, the director suggested to Laxmikant-Pyarelal that Roopkumar be tried out.

When Kishore Kumar missed a fraction of a beat in ‘Nazar Lage Na Saathiyo’-
Rajesh Roshan amusedly recollects the time when Kishore Kumar missed a fraction of a beat in Nazar lage na saathiyo’ because of the headphones vis-à-vis placement of the microphones for stereophonic sound in Des Pardes. When Stereophonic Sound first made inroads into our films, this kind of phenomenon was not rare even with the singing legends thanks to technical issues. The song (recorded live as was the norm then) was retained as the tiny slip can be noticed only by the sharp ear of a trained musician.

Did You Know? Om Shanti Om had five music composers-
The 2007 super-hit Om Shanti Om actually had five music directors on board in different capacities! Pyarelal of Laxmikant-Pyarelal arranged the song Dhoom tana composed by the film’s music directors, Vishal-Shekhar. He also appeared as himself in the end-credits. Sukhwinder Singh sang in Dard-e-disco, while Bappi Lahiri made a fleeting appearance in the film as himself!

S.D. Burman’s free interchange of creativity for Devdas-
Back in the days when composers would be cordial with each other, there was a free interchange of creativity. S.D. Burman, for example, has openly acknowledged the contribution of Salil Chowdhury in the background score of Bimal Roy’s Devdas. Along with Roy and his editor and assistant Hrishikesh Mukherjee, he had approached Salil-da himself to do the background score of the last four reels.

The reason why Roshan gave up the opportunity to enter the prestigious RK Films-
But perhaps the most touching example of true mutual regards was of Roshan, who was approached for a Raj Kapoor production after the showman had a spat with Shankar-Jaikishan. Sensing the strain in their bonding, the Barsaat Ki Raat composer actually arranged a truce between them rather than using it as an opportunity to enter the prestigious RK Films fold!

When Pritam chose Dhoom 3 over Ek Tha Tiger-
After Ek Tha Tiger (his first film to have proper songs), all of Kabir Khan’s movies have had music by Pritam. But the composer reveals that he had also been approached for that film. Thanks to his frenetic schedule then and the fact that song recordings today take long due to technological reasons, Pritam had to turn down the film. “Dhoom:3 was going to start then, and I obviously chose my franchise over Ek Tha Tiger!” said the composer then. But now, with a different director at the helm, Pritam comes into the third installment of the franchise, Tiger 3.

Two well-known singers ran away from their well-to-do families for music-
Two music directors who came from well-to-do families and ran away from home to do music were Madan Mohan and O.P. Nayyar. What most fans of theirs do not know is the fact that both were untrained formally in music and yet were so accomplished. Madan Mohan, in fact, was born in Baghdad in Iraq and was the son of the famed Rai Bahadur Chunilal, a partner in two prestigious studios, Bombay Talkies and Filmistan!

Five singers and one question-
For at least 20 years from the 1980s, aspiring playback singers went through a tough time in the industry. Composer-lyricist-singer Anand Raaj Anand, who hailed from a Delhi jeweller’s family, recounted how he tried to be a singer first and was asked, like everyone else, “Aap kya gaate ho (What do you sing)—Rafi, Mukesh ya (or) Kishore?” This question had a significant hand in his decision to become a composer himself! On the female side too, it was a “clone-ly” world with singers having to either toe the Lata Mangeshkar or the Asha Bhosle line!

How Krishna Duggal came to adopt the name Rajinder Krishan-
Many lyricists often adopted and still take on pen-names for themselves. But perhaps the most interesting example here is of the late Rajendra Krishan, a super-prolific writer-director who ruled the South-made Hindi cinema for a long while as well. Krishan Duggal was named ‘Rajinder’ by his mother on a whim as there was another close relative living with them named ‘Krishan’. And so when he came into the industry, he called himself Rajendra Krishan!

Irrfan Khan was to supposed play Krishna's Radha and Duryodhana in Qissa director Anup Singh’s next

Irrfan Khan passed away at the age of 53, on April 29, 2020. The whole world cried at his demise as he was a fine actor and was consistently giving memorable performances. Fans moreover wanted to see him more and with newer ideas being attempted, the actor surely would have continued to rock the show, had he not passed away.

Irrfan Khan was to supposed play Krishna's Radha and Duryodhana in Qissa director Anup Singh’s next

Earlier this year, a book on the actor, 'Irrfan: Dialogues With The Wind' written by Anup Singh. The author is a filmmaker who worked with the actor in Qissa (2015) and The Song Of The Scorpions (2017). The filmmaker has written about his experiences of working with the deceased actor. Both had a great bond and in the book, Anup revealed that he was in talks about multiple projects with Irrfan and one of the films they were seriously working on was the one where Irrfan was supposed to play Krishna’s Radha.

According to Anup, Irrfan Khan’s character in the film would be called Gulal who was born in a village near Vrindavan. He was known for the dance he’d do on Janmasthami. It involved thousands of men and boys dressed as women and pretended to be the gopis devoted to Krishna. Gulal’s graceful dance stood out and Anup Singh wrote that “while dancing, Gulal would go into a trance and would sometimes dance nonstop from dawn to dusk. He sang devotional songs people had not heard before and he said that Radha sang them to him.” Interestingly, Gulal becomes a husband and a father too, and yet, he’d dress up as a woman “whenever he felt Radha awakening within him.”

Irrfan Khan was excited to play the role, according to Anup. When he was being treated for cancer in the hospital in London, Irrfan Khan played the songs of Waheeda Rehman from films like Pyaasa (1957), Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962) and Guide (1965), as an inspiration for the character of Gulal. Irrfan noticed how the dipping of her eyelids, lowering of her head and even the tiniest twitch became a dance. He also suggested his eyebrows should be shaped like that of Waheeda Rehman’s.

Interestingly, Waheeda Rehman featured in an important role in The Song Of The Scorpions and Anup suggested to the actor that they can talk to the actress and learn the basic dance steps from her.

Anup Singh then narrates that he met Irrfan the last time when he was in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai. Anup Singh got more references for the character of Gulal and started telling him about it. Irrfan initially just smiled and realizing that his health is deteriorating and perhaps his end is near, he told Anup Singh that he should find someone else to play the part.

Besides this project, Anup Singh had thought of a few more ideas for his next collaboration with Irrfan. He said that he was working on the biopic of, Bulleh Shah, in which he wanted Irrfan Khan to essay the Punjabi Sufi poet’s teacher, Shah Inayat. Meanwhile, he was also toying with the idea of a film on the last days of Mahabharata’s Duryodhana. “Irrfan was to play Duryodhana,” wrote Anup Singh.

SHOCKING: When Irrfan Khan was attacked by a buffalo on the outskirts of Jaisalmer

Irrfan Khan, who passed away two years ago, on April 29, 2020, delivered several memorable performances in his illustrious career. However, for many moviegoers, his performance in Anup Singh’s Qissa (2015) ranks as one of his best. Irrfan Khan, too, was happy working with the talented director and both collaborated again on The Song Of The Scorpions (2017). The film was shot in the arid region of Rajasthan and the actor and the director both had a dangerous experience while shooting for this film. Anup Singh has documented this aspect in his book 'Irrfan: Dialogues With The Wind' which was released earlier this year.

SHOCKING: When Irrfan Khan was attacked by a buffalo on the outskirts of Jaisalmer

Anup Singh wrote that a scene he was shooting with Irrfan Khan didn’t come out as intended. After pack-up, he and the actor were returning to their hotel, in Jaisalmer. However, Anup told the driver to instead drive towards the sand dunes to clear their minds. They saw a tea shop and decided to halt there. As they sat there sipping tea and munching on glucose biscuits, a bullock and a calf began walking towards them. Both seemed malnourished and hungry. At Irrfan Khan’s suggestion, Anup Singh fed them biscuits. Both the animals eagerly had it, prompting Anup to buy more biscuits from the shop for them.

However, the bullock seemed aggressive. It began to ram into Anup a couple of times. The second time the bullock attacked him, Anup got hurt in the chest. During the third time, Anup wrote that “I felt the jolt tear through my body. My head lurched forward, and my left cheekbone smashed into its horn. For a moment, I felt my eye had popped out.”

Realizing things can go wrong, Irrfan Khan advised Anup Singh to jump over the low-boundary wall of the tea shop. Irrfan Khan then got mildly attacked too, prompting him to fall on his knees and hands. Irrfan, too, jumped over the wall. Thankfully, the bullock couldn’t jump and reach out to them. Anup Singh still had a few biscuits left and he threw them as far as he could. The bullock instantly ran towards the biscuits. This is when Anup Singh realized that while Irrfan had some scratches on his palms, his chest was “blotchy with bruises”.

The bullock finished the biscuits by then and returned in front of the wall, behind which Irrfan Khan and Anup Singh were hiding. Anup Singh narrated in the book that even in such a life-and-death situation, Irrfan’s sense of humour was intact. Irrfan began talking to the bullock, “Bhai, aapko zara sochna chahiye. Agar aapko koi kuch khila raha tha, toh kya zaroorat hai uski haddiyan todne ki.” He then asked the animal, “Aap humein ab jaane doge ki nahin?”

Anup Singh then reminded the actor that he had the driver’s phone number. He quickly called the driver and told him to come to the spot where they were hiding from the bullock. The driver arrived, opened the back door for them and both immediately jumped into the car and sped away.

In the car, Irrfan told Anup Singh that “Something has changed.” Anup later mentioned in the book that this crazy experience they had helped Irrfan Khan in cracking the shot that they had difficulties shooting a day before
