Priyanka Chopra, who is global goodwill ambassador of UNICEF and has had long with-standing relationship with them, recently visited Kenya in order to meet children and their families and help them get resources and funds for food and basic necessities.
The actress took to Instagram on Thursday to share a video with a caption that read, “One of the things that you see in a crises like this one, unfolding in the Horn of Africa, is that the infrastructure cannot handle the sheer influx of people in need. In a situation like this, innovative initiatives implemented on the ground, can literally be the difference between life and death.”
She added, “Given the drought and the resulting nutrition crises, the health infrastructure in Northern Kenya and other regions is severely under strain. In order to ensure as many children as possible have access to quality health care, @Unicef has implemented a programme that mobilizes community workers, mainly women, from each community.”
Priyanka further wrote, “A key task for these community workers is ensuring children don’t miss out on routine immunisations. A child who is malnourished has a weaker immune system and therefore their bodies are more susceptible to various deadly but preventable diseases. The passion and persistence of these frontline health workers such as Nurse Mercy and Volunteer Beatrice is so inspiring. They are working in extremely difficult conditions, ensuring children across the region have a better chance of survival. They might not wear capes but they are superheroes!”

The actress also shared a series of photos of children and wrote, “As dire as the situation was on the ground in Kenya, these smiling faces reminded me that there is hope, and that by continuing to push forward we can make a tangible difference for millions of children. But to do that, we need your help. There are millions of children right now who are living on the brink of starvation and one child slips into severe acute malnutrition every 60 seconds in the 15 hardest-hit crisis countries, which includes Kenya. @unicef’s appeal for the Horn of Africa is just over half funded. I implore everyone, be it governments, private sector, individuals, please give as much as you can to save lives and prevent countries in this region from spiralling into famine.”
